New year with sunset

This year has started with great sunsets.

This one is awesome because it has the mist in the middle of the horizon and there isn't any straight line between sky and the ground.

And this one was just two days after. I thought about taking my camera and set it up for timelapse shooting, but then I thought about it that the sun was already settling in and I would caught the sunset in the middle.

Although I took a short video with my phone camera.

Last and first picture of the year

Yesterday when the sun was settling in, I was walking my dog and I thought about it as the last sunset of the year 2023. Really last rays of light that night.

The night was clear and I had a brief moment a thought about setting up my camera for the night and shoot night timelapse where stars travel across the sky, but it was pretty cold and it is about the get colder, so battery life would be really really short.

And today it was still clear sky and it meant even colder day and nice sunrise, which happened to be this year's first sunrise!

Clouds of fire

I was walking my dog yesterday and I noticed how the clouds seemed like the flames of the sun.

A bit wider version of the same.

And today there were also a clouds of fire in the sky.

A bit wider version of the same.

Most depressing time of the year?

This might be the most depressing time of the year, since all the leaves have fallen from the trees and day is getting really short, at least in this latitude, so it is dark most of the time, it's wet, since the weather is a bit too warm to have snow, but too cold anyways to be outside.

But being outside at the right time might set just one of a kind show in the sky.

These Aurora Borealises I might have missed if I hadn't turned off my headlight when I was walking my dog way too early in the morning.

Or if I had driven just a bit faster than normal, I would have missed this sunrise when the sun is just rising above the horizon and is almost going behind the forest, before it rises again.

Or if I had decided to take another route with my dog when we were on our day walk. Sun went behind that puffy clouds just before it settled in for the day.

Sometimes clouds remind me

..of a movie.

Low hanging tentacles from the cloud. When I saw this cloud formation, I knew that I knew the movie, but I couldn't pinpoint what movie this scene was off.

Most of the time your imagination makes association with something that you have seen or dream about with the clouds, these aren't any exact things, that can be transferred to point of view.

Or sometimes it is so obvious that everyone sees it the same way.

Three layers of clouds

Today in our morning walk with my dog, I noticed three layers of clouds in the sky. And the lower level ones moved really fast.

I live and commute in a pretty level section of Finland. This is "agricultural center of Finland" and there aren't that many hills or forests that are blocking the view in the far end of the sky. And most of the time I spot clouds while I am driving.

I don't know is this real sun pillar or just lens refraction of the camera, but it was awesome to see.

Other wonderful but quite rare is to see in the high sky wave clouds

Cloud shadows and puffy ones

I should really start to carrying my DSLR when ever I am outside. As I was walking my dog the other day, clouds played shadow game in the sky and I cursed a bit in my mind that I didn't take the DSLR after all.

Okay, it really doesn't show that much when you compare to wider shot from the same camera.

Puffy clouds that look like bits of cotton wool floating in lots of blue sky are a sign of fair weather.  Also they are called Altocumulus clouds.

This time of the year clouds are making wonderful paintings in the sky, just when it is settling in or just about rise for the new day.
